Looking Back at the History of Cinemark Theatres

Cinemark Logo

Cinemark first launched back in 1984 and was founded by Lee Roy Mitchell. Initially, the chain covered territoties in Texas, Utah, and California. Moving forward, the company was managed by the family and eventually started to acquire smaller, local theatre chains. In less than 10 years the theatre chain grew to cover most of the United States.

In 2006, Cinemark continued to grow, acquiring 80 new cinemas from Century Theatres with cash and stock bonds. Three years later in 2009, Cinemark purchased four theatres from Muvico Theaters in an attempt to save Muvico from bankruptcy.

2012 saw Cinemark grow once more when it started buying Rave theatres. These acquisitions were a pivotal point in Cinemark’s history as it was also the first time the company began acquiring high-quality IMAX screens. Unfortunately, some of these were lost in an attempt to cut costs and other theatres were sold to Carmike Cinemas.

Since 2013 and 2014 Cinemark has begun its new plans for expansion and renovation. Many of the older cinemas are being retrofitted with the latest Dolby Atmos surround system and an upgraded version of the aforementioned XD large screens so that they could now show standard 2D and Real-D 3D as well.

Cinemark met its first controversy in 1997 when they were charged by the Department of Justice for not following the Americans with Disabilities Act. This was caused by the new stadium-type seating arrangement which forced people on wheelchairs to sit at the very front of the theatre.

After a little back and forth, the case was settled and Cinemark agreed to renovate their theatres so that guests on wheelchairs could be seated in the higher rows.

Back in 2008, the company was also facing political controversy when the former CEO of Cinemark, Alan Stock, donated money towards the Proposition 8 movement that would prohibit same-sex marriage in the state of California. Many movie theatre patrons rebelled against this and began a counter-campaign in rivaling movie theatre chains.

This came to a drop when the US Supreme Court reinstated same-sex marriage and denounced Proposition 8 to be unconstitutional.

Terror struck the cinema chain in 2012 when a lone gunman open fired inside a Century Theater in Aurora, Colorado. 12 people were confirmed killed and 70 other patrons were injured. This has since been noted as the largest mass shooting in the history of the United States when both casualties and injuries are taken into account.

More recently in 2014, Cinemark was one of the major theatre chains to withdraw the movie The Intervie (2014) from cinemas. Cinemark was forced to do so due to the hack on Sony Pictures and terrorist threats to bomb any theatre showing the movie.

Movie-Going Innovations from Cinemark Theatres

Cinemark is known for being one of the very first theatre chains to utilize stadium-type seating. Back in the 1990s, this caused quite a mess and even lead to a court case led by the DOJ in regards to the poor seating opportunities for people on wheelchairs. As mentioned above, the case was settled shortly with Cinemark agreeing to change the arrangement so disabled people could sit in higher rows.

Cinemark is the only theatre to feature a unique screen design known as XD and most, if not all, of the existing Cinemark theatres, utilize this large screen concept.

A number of other extras can be chosen from to increase the movie experience. Some of the more popular ones include D-BOX, IMAX, and their luxury loungers.

Cost for Cinemark Movie Theater Tickets

Although being one of the largest theatre chains in the world, the average cost of a Cinemark movie ticket is relatively low. You’ll find their prices to be much cheaper than the average price from rivaling movie theatre chains such as the world’s largest cinema chain, AMC.

Fortunately, lower prices and movie quality are not related when it comes to Cinemark. Especially one you factor in the numerous charity events, loyalty programs, and instant access to online movie ticket purchasing and all the amenities and conveniences for its patrons are there.

Not sure how much your movie night would cost? You can check online for Cinemark prices for standard films, 3D viewing, and IMAX viewing if the latter is available in your region.

  1. When you deal with the public anytime someone is going to annoy you. I am sure I have annoyed people in the past as they annoy me. If you get annoyed easily, stay at home and watch your movie. I believe many cable providers are offering movies shortly after the theatres show them. My husband annoys the crap out of me at the movies. Small bladder:/ Of course he annoys me at home too forever going to the bathroom in the middle of a show we are watching. But still I prefer to watch movies at home. I don’t care to be annoyed by a stranger and God knows germs and head lice are present in theatres. I wouldn’t allow some of these trashy people into my home so why would I want to sit next to one?

  2. Most adult movies are hugely inappropriate to have kids in at any age especially small. It is loud chaotic often times very sexual and or violent. I can’t imagine why an adult would want to bring a child of any age even an infant into an environment like that. Additionally the volume of most movies today in the theater is so loud that it cannot be good for very young ears.

I’m not supporting the people who said don’t bring your kid because it’s annoying. I would suggest not bringing your kid because it’s good parenting not too.

  3. Lol I can’t wait for you guys to have childre…. Anyone has a right to go to the movies with kids. Stop complaining. As long as they’re being courteous with the toddler if they are making noise then it should be okay I can recall more times being interrupted by stupid adults and teens with their phones out during the movie than being interrupted by a toddler..

  4. For the real d 3D movies, Are the glasses covered in the price of the ticket(s) OR do you have to pay extra for them??

  5. I think it is completely ridiculous to charge for a two year old to watch a movie when they are asleep in a parent’s arms especially when its not even a children’s movie you guys really need to rethink the whole charging for a child to sleep in the parents arms

    1. 1st thing is why even bring you 2 year old in the theater, how many times do we all have to get our movie interrupted by a restless toddler.
Some people have stepped out into the hallway with there child, but even that is disruptive for others,.

do us all a favor, rent a dvd or hire a babysitter like we do!

      1. Well said. Toddlers should never be brought into a movie theater. People choosing to have children need to accept certain sacrifices come with that choice. Social etiquette and respect/courtesy for others is part of it.

        1. So because we have kids we can’t bring them to enjoy kid movies. Why does our kids have to stay home with a baby sitter.? I’m not going to go on a state and watch finding dory with out my little ones. Makes no sense. Some people are so cruel. Glade they allow us to bring our kids. Kids like to get out and enjoy movies just as much as you old people do. We pay just like you guys, so what if our child cry’s during a movie. They do it at home as well when they are tired. Let’s not act like kids only act up outside the home. Be serious here people. Everybody and I mean everybody has embarrassing moments or has had embarrassing moments with there children, so let’s not not act like its just at the movie theater. and it Dang sure isn’t just young mothers I’ve seen women in there 30s being embarrassed and disrespected by their children.

        2. The experience itself you moron. My daughter just turned 3 not too long ago but her first movie was finding dory and she was 2… and now she remembers going to the movies and having popcorn cause she asks to go. I understand not taking your child to a grown up movie but I would take her over and over again at age 2 to a child movie because we had a BLAST. You sound ridiculous.

    2. Then leave the child with a sitter. It is rude to bring a child to a movie not for children. It makes for an unknowable time out for others that aren’the paying to hear your child fuss. Just saying this for non children movies.

    3. Folks that are suggesting to leave kids home with strangers must not have kids at all, or they don’t love theirs. As someone said already, its about the experience for kids.

Those who are saying it disturbs their ecperience must have very unruly kids and they think same applies for every kid. Just cause you cannot help your kids to behave, don’t think others have same problem.

I agree with others. Shame on the Cinemark corporate to try charging for kids under 3. They don’t understand anything. Even airlines do not charge for below 2 years and you are charging everyone above 1. This is greedy.
