History of Cineworld
In July 1996, the first Cineworld was inaugurated in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The same year saw the opening of another cinema in Wakefield, Yorkshire. Not two years later in November 1998, Cineworld locations in Shrewsbury and Shropshire were opened to the public. Subsequent theaters became operational throughout the 90s and early 2000s.
In 2005, Cineworld took over the operations of UGC, a French cinema company, in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The Blackstone Group, after becoming privately owned, merged into Cineworld in 2004 and brought with them a substantial investment. It became the biggest shareholder of Cineworld Group PLC until it decided to sell its remaining 20 percent shares in November 2010.
By 2015, Cineworld was maintaining 82 cinema locations in Great Britain, Jersey, and Ireland. At the time, it had plans to open more cinemas in many other locations within and outside the UK.
Today, Cineworld remains one of the largest cinema operators in the UK, with more than 800 screens spread around the country. In Ireland, Cineworld boasts single biggest multiplex in terms of viewing screens and customer base.
Cineworld in Scotland, specifically their location at Renfrew Street, Glasgow, is the tallest in the world and also the United Kingdom’s busiest.
Cineworld Group PLC currently trades on the FTSE with a current market cap of $1.69 billion as of 16 March 2017.
Cineworld Innovations
Cineworld is proud of its cinemas, each which has between 1 and 20 screens. Apart from showing the latest movie releases, it also shows opera, theater acts, concerts, and sports. Recent renovations Cineworld has undertaken is replacing some of its own CafeBars with Starbucks coffee shops.
By September 2013, a number of its cinemas already have highly-advanced IMAX viewing screens, with a majority of them featuring the impressive D-BOX theatre technology.
Many new sites sign contracts including the installation and operation of both IMAX and D-BOX. Furthermore, some older cinema complexes are being upgraded with IMAX screens as well.
Cineworld’s Milton Keynes location recently acquired the “Superscreen” and 4DX screen, known to be the first cinema to do so in the United Kingdom. Cineworld plans to install the “Superscreen” and the 4DX screens to more locations in the near future.
As part of its continuous innovations, the chain offers a new premium cinema feature, known as The Screening Rooms, in June 2011. Located just adjacent to the Cheltenham cinema, its Screening Rooms has become a major attraction to a good number of movie goers primarily because it offers much more spacious seats covered in fine leather, as well as premium quality food and drinks with table service.
How Much Do Cineworld Tickets Cost?
Ticket prices at Cineworld aren’t the highest in the country, but they also aren’t the lowest.
The wide selection of experiences you can choose from such as the standard screen, IMAX, 3D, IMPACT, and 4DX, ensure you’ll be able to find the right price for you.
Cineworld theater prices can also be vastly reduced through a number of discounts and programs offered which is discussed further below.
As with many cinema chains, specific ticket prices for the Cineworld you’re looking to visit, are available online, through their app, or with a phone call. You can download their iOS app here or their Android app here.
Unfortunately, both version has received dismal reviews receiving a 1-star rating from 486 ratings on iOS, and 1.5-stars on Android from 520 reviews.
For specific prices of tickets in your region, we recommend to check them out online. Go to the cinemas’ official website to find out the current movies that are being shown and their corresponding ticket prices. You can also reserve your theater seats via its online services.
Ticket Discounts
Cineworld is quite unique in the type of member program they offer. They have chosen to take a completely different route from the usual, spend money with us, earn points, then redeem those points as their membership program.
Instead, they offer a monthly card named Unlimited, which does exactly what it says. For a price of £17.40/month, you can “See any film any time as many time as you like”. There is a few exclusion which you can read about here.
That’s not all, though. Joining the Unlimited program will grant you 10% all snacks and drinks, as well as exclusive preview screenings of the latest blockbuster flicks. Not a bad deal!
Some recent testimonials from Unlimited members include:
My first #cineworld #unlimitedscreening and I’ve got free popcorn and 3D glasses at no extra cost. Small pleasures. Seeing #FreeFire
Golf then when the gaffers finished work off to @cineworld for #unlimitedscreening #FreeFire #freepopcorn it doesn’t get any better

Hello,
I would like to purchase three CineWorld ticket cards for my nephew/nieces – all under the age of 14 years – as a Christmas gift, for them to use as and when they find a film they would like to see.
I have been unable to find the right area to do this so would be very appreciative for your help in this matter please.
Thank you.
