Largest Cinema Screen in Dublin
We all know, the bigger the screen the better. Which is why we often ask ourselves, why aren’t I watching this movie on a bigger screen? What would seeing the world’s best action flick (obviously Die Hard 2) on the biggest movie screen I can watch it in?
Lucky you, we’re here to give you the answer (only if you live in Dublin though!). Dublin has quite a few cinemas in its city. If you go through the above list, you’ll find 18 different theatres to try out. But we only want to know one thing – which one has the biggest of them all.
There have been many debates online revolving around which cinema is the biggest. And with all the cinemas in the running not making available their screen sizes, it’s been quite difficult to come up with an answer.
A few online boards and forums have narrowed it down to a few contenders:
- Savoy Screen 1 on O’Connell Street
- Cineworld Screen 17 on Parnell Street
- Vue Cinemas in Liffey Valley
- Odeon Point Village in North Dock
One movie-goer, Sad Professor, has come up with a range of estimates of their screen sizes:
- Vue Cinemas – 19.2 m x 10.15 m – 195 sqm
- Odeon Point Village – 18 m x 9.2 m – 165.6 sqm
- Savoy Screen 1 – 21.4 m x 6.8 m – 145.52 sqm
- Cineworld Screen 17 – 17.1 m x 7.5 m – 128.25 sqm
According to his calculations, Vue Cinemas in Liffey Valley has the largest screen in Dublin, with Odeon Point and Savoy Screen 1 coming in 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
However, multiple users across other sites including Reddit.com/r/ireland and Thumped.com all side with Savoy 1 holding the largest screen.
Again, with no official size provides by the cinemas, we, unfortunately, can’t provide a definitive answer. Whatever the case, though, we guarantee you’ll have any awesome time seeing any movie in either one of the four largest cinema screens in Dublin.
NEWS: There have been recent rumours regarding Savoy Screen 1 and the possibility of it being removed and deconstructed. IMC themselves have released a statement explaining if any changes were to be made to the screen, nothing would change its size.
Awesome stuff! The huge screen is here to say.
BONUS: Largest Capacity Cinema in Dublin

Cinema History in Ireland
The first dedicated cinema Dublin ever saw was the Volta Cinematograph. Construction for the cinema completed on 20 December 1909 at 45 Mary Street. Five movies were shown on the cinemas opening night including Devilled Crab, Bewitched Castle, and The First Paris Orphanage.
Volta Cinematograph closed in 1919 until it was re-opened in 1921 as Lyceum Picture Theatre. Lyceum increased its capacity to 600, but, unfortunately, the cinema was never extremely popular and closed for good in 1948.
Today, a small department store sits at 45 Mary Street. But it you go for a visit, you’ll find a small plaque marking the significance of the site’s history in Dublin cinema.
The Ambassador Cinema comes in a close second after it officially became a full-time cinema in 1910. Over the years, the cinema changed hands often, and in 1950 the cinema was redesigned with a capacity increase to 1,200.
Another renovation was conducted in 1994, but attendance still remained poor with as little as 2 people showing up for screenings. After 45 years of showing movies, The Ambassador Cinema closed its doors in 1999.
Today, the building is used as an exhibition hall and event centre for the people of Dublin.
The first movie ever shot in Ireland was The Lad from Old Ireland, released in 1910. It’s 12 minutes long and you can watch it for free whenever you like on Youtube here. The Lad from Old Ireland was filmed across Cork and Killarney in Ireland with a single reel by the Kalem Company.
